Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. The orphanage provides care for orphaned and maimed elephants. Visitors to the orphanage enjoy feeding the elephants milk and fruit, and watching them play and take their daily baths. Check the visitor activity times here.

Moon Plains in Nuwara Eliya

The picturesque Moon Plains are a short distance from the central Sri Lankan city of Nuwara Eliya also known as Little England. The area is designated as an environmental tourism zone. It offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountain ranges, including the tallest peak, the Pidurutalagala. The Moon Plains are home to much wildlife including elk, wild buffalo, deer and many types of birds.

Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya

Victoria Park was said to be named to commemorate the 60th Jubilee Coronation of Queen Victoria in 1897. The park was originally used as a scientific research field by Hakgala Botanical Gardens. The park houses a wide range of trees and plants, and is brimmed with flowers, including several varieties of roses and orchids, and fruits, in April.

Minneriya National Park

The park is located 182 km from Colombo in the Polonnaruwa District and opened for public in May 1998. Twenty-four species of mammals have been spotted at this park. Most important of them are the wild elephants. The central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Reservoir, which was built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena. The best time to visit the park is early mornings and late evenings.

The Udawalawe National Park is one of the world’s best places to see wild elephants in their habitat. The park is home to many water buffalo, water lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard. It is also an exciting location for bird enthusiasts.

Yala National Park

The most famous national park in Sri Lanka is Yala, which is located 290 km southeast from Colombo. It is home to wildlife such as leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. The best time to visit the Yala National Park is between February and July when the search for water sources brings the wild animals into the open.
